  The best way to do this is to get on a good website that offers a decent forum or blog where you can interact with others out there.  You should be able to ask a few questions and you are sure to get a few responses about the dedicated server and about the web hosting companies to work with. 

  More than likely, you will also learn quite a bit about the web hosting companies that others have not had luck with.  Everyone wants to tell about the problems that they have had of course.
